Biographical Note

John Russell Black was born on 12 May 1908 at North Adelaide, South Australia. He was educated in Adelaide, including Pulteney Street School and St. Peters College. In 1926 he was appointed Cadet under Sir Douglas Mawson and Dr C.T. Madigan, Department of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Adelaide. He was forced to leave because of the depression and took over the management of a family farm at Mt. Compass, south of Adelaide. In 1928 he was commissioned in 48 Bn Militia AMF as a lieutenant and by 1932 had passed all subjects for the rank of captain.

In 1933, Black was appointed Cadet Patrol Officer in the Department of District Service and Native Affairs, Mandated Territory of New Guinea. During the war he served with ANGAU in New Guinea and with the British Borneo Civil Affairs Unit in Borneo. From 1946 to 1948 he was Assistant Director (Planning and Research) in the Department of District Services and Native Affairs in the Provisional Administration of the Territory of Papua New Guinea. He resigned to pursue business in timber, gold and salvage enterprises.

Black returned to South Australia in 1953 to farm near Maitland on Yorke Peninsula, the family property of his wife Dawn Reid Smith who he had married in 1946. He retired from active farming in 1985 and devoted his attention to working on his New Guinea papers. Black never lost interest or contact with New Guinea. In 1972 he returned to the Finintegu area (now Henganofi) on behalf of the Commonwealth Arts Board and in 1975 was invited to be present at the Independence celebrations in Port Moresby. He kept in touch with former colleagues, particularly Jim Taylor and Apo, once his personal assistant.

In 1985 Black was granted visiting Research Fellow status at the Annexe of the South Australian Museum. He was Fellow of the American Geographical Society, of the Institute of Public Administration, and of the Royal Anthropological Institute.

Black died suddenly on 6 April 1988, only a few weeks before his 80th birthday. His wife Dawn had died on 2 June 1986. He was survived by his five children, Rita, Ian, Alistair, Helen and Christopher.

Series 2. General administration 1933-1937

John Black arrived in Rabaul, New Guinea in June 1933 to commence his appointment as Cadet Patrol Officer with the Administration of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea. He was one of the ten cadets selected from 1659 applicants. His ten diaries are a comprehensive record of his life in New Guinea from his arrival until September 1937, when he went on leave to Australia prior to the Hagen-Sepik Patrol (see Series 3). Black was then administering 'uncontrolled' territory. During this period Black was involved in significant activities in the uncontrolled regions, on patrol, in charge of Finintegu Police Post after McGrath's death, and in pacification work in the Chimbu area.

This series also includes personal papers and notebooks, patrol reports by Black, A.F. Kyle and J.L. Taylor; official printed material; Lutheran and Roman Catholic material probably acquired from mission stations during the war; and various lecture notes from his study leave in Sydney in 1935.

Black illustrated his daily journals with photos, and news clippings. He annotated and clarified points at a later date.

Series 3. Hagen-Sepik Patrol 1937-1939

This major exploratory expedition into the highlands west of Mount Hagen took place from 9 March 1938 to 19 June 1939 under the leadership of J.L. Taylor (Hagen-Sepik Patrol 1938-39: Interim report, Annual Report Territory of New Guinea, 1938-1939: 137-49). The expedition operated as one party until 13 June 1938 when it then split in order to cover as much ground as possible. Black led a party westward to Telefomin, completing this exploration in April 1939 when he rejoined Taylor in Wabag. For security and other reasons, little publicity was given to Taylor and Black, and details of their discoveries were suppressed. Of particular interest in this section are Black's patrol diaries, two large volumes of written and illustrated information and comments. Correspondence about a re-enactment of the patrol in 1988 and publishing a book is also included here.

The large volumes are a detailed, illustrated account of Black's part in the Hagen-Sepik Patrol. They require special care.

Series 3. Hagen-Sepik Patrol 1937-1939

This collection contains photographs Black took on the Hagen-Sepik Patrol, comprising 1938-39 prints, and 1938-39 single negatives and rolls of negatives from some of which prints were taken between 1939 and 1996. The last 28 prints (491-519) were taken by others.

At Wabag, in August 1938, Taylor told Walsh to develop and caption photographs that patrol members took and make sets for official purposes and personal records. Some of Black's prints therefore show Walsh's hand. Of the sets Walsh made, only Black's survived. Taylor's and the official sets were lost during World War II; Walsh's were lost in the 1974 Brisbane flood.

File 12 (photos 1-52): Conceivably, Walsh took these photographs. They show his format and print paper, their captions are by him, some of his photographs for the period are missing, Black appears in two prints, and Walsh's prints and these address similar subjects. Nonetheless, almost certainly Black took them: no gaps can be found for them in Walsh's print numbers (MS 9219/1), and comparing print 3 below with Walsh's roll 7/2 print shows the same moment by two differently placed cameras. Print numbers follow Walsh's where possible, even when not chronological. Where they exist, Walsh's numbers are in brackets, e.g.: 2 (A2).

Files 13-14 (photos 53-273). In 1998 Gammage attributed these photographs to Black, put them in approximate chronological order, and captioned them. Prints 237- 273, taken in Dufaycolor by Black between Feramin and Enga, may be the only colour photos ever taken at first contact. The colour negatives have not been found.

File 15 (photos 274-519) comprises 13 rolls of Black's negative film, 217 contact prints and 14 prints of these done in 1939-96, and 28 prints (491-519) Black possessed but did not take. In 1938-39 prints were taken from some of the negative rolls and appear in Black's diary, in files 12-14, and elsewhere. In 1987 Black could not recall who took prints 491-519. Possibly 491-495 are by Kevin Sheeky while on a Hoiyevia air drop; 496-504 and 507-519 by Mick Leahy; 505-506 by George Greathead.

Original captions are in quotation marks; other captions were added in 1998 by Bill Gammage, whose book, The sky travellers (MUP 1998), contains additional information.

Black's Hagen-Sepik diary contains some photographs not included here. Hagen- Sepik photographs are also in MS 8254 (Ian Downs), MS 9218 (Jim Taylor), MS 9219 (Pat Walsh) and MS 9220 (Bill Gammage). ScreenSound Australia holds movie film taken on the patrol.
