Incomplete. 55p. First days in Melbourne, problems of getting work, first impressions of Australians and the country, trying to milk wild cattle, leaving for the diggings - meeting with men who had been robbed in the bush, and with returning diggers, getting lost in the bush, description of diggings, employment at Dr. Barker's head station, making damper, working with the sheep, description of the other workers and visitors - incl. shearers from Van Diemens land.

On the Barker's station, working with dogs, meeting a murderer, losing some sheep one night, living on the range, cooking in the bush - difficulty in making damper, descriptions of fauna, skinning possums, taking over a flock of 100 sheep on an outstation - problems of a small flock, killing a sheep for supper.
