Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was presented to the Library in December, 1960 by Dorothy M. Catts. Manuscript and other parliamentary important items are housed in 7 boxes and 2 bundles, MS 658. Printed material, which includes a bound set of the Railway and Tramway Review, 1903-1910, and serials and pamphlets relating to the Labor Party, has been interfiled with the Library's Australian collection, marked with the initials J.H.C.

Biographical Note

James Howard Catts (1877-1951) took his first public office when he became General Secretary, United Progress Association of N.S.W. in 1900. In 1903 he became the General Secretary of the Railway and Tramway Association and he was for many years actively concerned in Union affairs. In 1906 he was returned to Federal Parliament as the Labor member for Cook, N.S.W. which seat he retained till expelled from the A.L.P. in 1922. With Dorothy M. Catts, he subsequently established the Associated Business Services, Pty. Ltd., The Australian Home Budget and Home Budget Pattern Industries. His other main interests, till his death in 1951 were civic affairs and astronomy.

Dorothy Marguerite Catts, who died in 1961, was a partner in her husband's business activities. The author of eight historical novels, she was an office bearer of the Society of Women Writers of New South Wales and the Fellowship of Australian Writers. She was a close friend of Dame Mary Gilmore. Her two most important works are her biography of her husband, and King O'Malley: man and statesman. (Syd., Publicity Press, 1957.)
