Introduction

Scope and Contents

The Australian Postgraduate Federation in Medicine was formed out of a concept by the State Postgraduate Committees who felt the need for a Federal overviewing body. This need was first expressed in 1946. The first Annual Meeting of the Federation was staged in 1948.

The Federation's records to 1970 were transferred to the National Library in 1982. The bulk of the material in the collection is correspondence, relating to the education, training and exchange of medical personnel from South and Southeast Asia; conferences on postgraduate medical education; overseas lecturers who either came, or spoke, under the auspices of the Federation, or State committees; and internal workings of the Federation.

Conditions Governing Access

Please refer to the collection's catalogue record (http://nla.gov.au/nla.cat-vn679129) for the access conditions.

Administrative History

The Federation was established in 1948 as a loose combination of postgraduate committees. In 1962 it was incorporated as a Public Company Limited by Guarantee, and was granted certain tax concessions. It also affiliated with the Australian Medical Association in this year.

The objectives of the Federation have been included - these show the activities in which the Federation is engaged.

The records of correspondence to and from the Federation transferred to the National Library were all organised into files. The file units have been maintained. The files have been ordered into series according to the activity or subject to which they relate.
