Administrative History
The Asian Studies Association of Australia is a non-profit organisation with the purpose of promoting the study of Asian languages, societies, cultures and politics in Australia; supporting teaching and research in Asian studies; encouraging the exchange of information through publications, conferences and seminars; facilitating contacts between scholars and teachers in the field of Asian studies and serving as a professional body representing their interests to government and the community and to contribute towards an understanding of Asia in the community at large.
The Association was established at a meeting held in Canberra during the ANZAAS Conference in January 1975 and adopted a constitution at its first National Conference in May 1976. Membership is comprised of individuals engaged in teaching or research in any field of Asian studies and individuals and organisations that subscribe to the objects of the Association.
Affairs of the Association are administered by the Executive Committee, which consists of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Publications Officer. Policy of the Association is determined by the Council, which is comprised of the members of the Executive Committee, one member each representing the regions of Asia and three members elected as general representatives.
The Association has a bienniel National Conference and general meeting. Publications include the periodicals Newsletter (1975-77), Review (1977-89) and Asian studies review (1990-) and numerous monographs.

Files maintained by National Curriculum Officers Elaine McKay (1980-81) and Dr Christine Inglis (1982-86). The role of the NCO was to liaise with a network of State officers, each of whom was responsible for the promotion of Asian studies in their school systems. The files include correspondence, reports, working papers and submissions.
