Scope and Contents
MS 7573 comprises correspondence, notes, roneoed material, photocopies and printed material relating to such matters as O.E.C.D., the Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conference, the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission and the Committee of Research into the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Higher Education.
The correspondents include John Lowe, J.A. Ross and W.J. More. Copies of some of Karmel's letters are also included.
MS Acc03.208 includes working files for talks and articles, and correspondence and material generated by the institutions with which Karmel was associated. The instalment also includes offprints of Karmel's articles, personal material, other publications and articles, reference material, and charts of statistics.

Biographical Note
Academic. Karmel was Chairman of the Board, Institute of the Arts, Australian National University from 1992. His other posts included Vice-Chancellor of Australian National University 1982-87, Chairman of the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission 1977-82, Leader of the O.E.C.D. Review of New Zealand Education Policy 1982 and member of the Commonwealth Government Review into the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Higher Education 1985-86.
Karmel published extensively, including works for the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission entitled Recommendation for 1978 (1977) and Draft report on study leave, April 1978 (1978).
