Introduction

Scope and Contents

The collection consists mainly of letters from William and Samuel Rawson to their father John Rawson and other members of the family such as their sisters Marianne, Ellin and Elizabeth.

Samuel Rawson came to Australia in 1838 aboard the Florentia and joined the 28th regiment in Sydney.

William Rawson was employed in Calcutta in a merchant house but had to leave India for health reasons. From India he went to Van Diemen's Land in 1842, and travelled from there to South Australia and Victoria. Later he travelled to the New England area where he took up a station. He died in Charleville about 1866.

John Rawson (father of William and Samuel) spent his life-time in England in the Halifax area.

Apart from the numerous letters the collection also contains 6 diaries and logs of sea journeys undertaken by various members of the family, plans of the ships "Florentia" and "Thomas Coutts" and also plans of the city of Adelaide. There is also a prayer book and a silk play bill for an amateur production in Perth, Western Australia.
