Introduction

Scope and Contents

A large group of papers accumulated by Sir john Ferguson during the course of his life and career. Comprises correspondence with missionaries, institutions such as the National Library, collectors and historians concerning his interest in collecting Australiana and in compiling his Bibliography of Australia; family correspondence; files of cuttings, manuscripts, both original and copies; notes and printed items on such topics as local histories, particular events in Australian history, and missionary work in the Pacific Islands; medals; early Australian money; papers relating to his work with the State Library of New South Wales and the Royal Australian Historical Society; and manuscript drafts and galley proofs of his Bibliography of Australia.

Statement about the Extent of this Guide

The Library is in the process of creating a full descriptive guide for this collection. As an interim measure, only currency items identified through the Library's 2016 Currency Project are described below.

Currency, c.1812-1848 (File)

24 early Australian currency related items. Items 1-14 were originally located in box 20/folder 131 of the collection . Items 15-24 were originally located in box 82/folder 7 of the collection.

Items 15-24 relate to the Bank of Australia which was established by John MacArthur and business associates on 8th June 1826. After a healthy start the bank failed on 2nd March 1843. The liquidation of the Bank of Australia resulted in the remaining assets of the bank being disposed of by lottery to the shareholders. A shareholder had the right to ‘assign’ their ticket to someone else for the sum of £4. Plans for a second lottery in April, 1849 were objected to by the government and it did not take place.

Additional information

Colonial Police Fund of New South Wales founded 1 April 1810 by Governor Macquarie: effectively the first treasury. The funds received were for expenses relating to police, jails and capital works.
