The Aboriginal Development Commission was created on 1 July 1980 as a statutory body under the Aboriginal Development Commission Act 1980. The Commission incorporated the functions of the former Aboriginal Loans Commission and the Aboriginal Land Fund Commission. Functions of the Aboriginal Development Commission included furthering the economic and social development of Aboriginal people by assisting them to acquire land, engage in business enterprises, and to provide and assist in obtaining finance for housing and other needs.
