Introduction
Scope and Contents
The Rex Nan Kivell Collection of pictures, books, manuscripts, maps and objects is one of the finest collections held in the Library. Sir Rex Nan Kivell built up a personal collection of material relating to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific while a director of the Redfern Gallery in London. The transfer of his collection to the Library began in 1948 and formal transfer of ownership took place in 1959, with consignments continuing throughout his lifetime.
His personal papers comprise a large body of correspondence, both personal and business, art catalogues and invitations, manuscript and typescript drafts and proofsheets of his Portraits of the famous and infamous..., manuscript and typescript lists of his catalogue of the collection, press cuttings, miscellaneous typescripts, family history and personal documents. The folio items include two large 'scrapbook' albums containing photographs, invitations and press cuttings.

Item Descriptions
Series 1. Correspondence
The greater part of the papers is correspondence between Rex Nan Kivell and dealers and individuals concerning the formation of his Australasian collection. There are many letters dealing with the collection of and research into portraits for his Portraits of the famous and infamous. Correspondence with the National Library documents the long negotiations which led to the transfer of the collection and the continuing relationship between the Library and Nan Kivell. The series includes correspondence with New Zealand institutions regarding the transfer of the collection and items in it. Also included is personal correspondence with friends and family. There is a smaller amount of business correspondence concerning contemporary art works purchased and sold for the Redfern Gallery. Correspondence with dealers and invoices for purchases are also included. Some of the outgoing business correspondence is from Harry Tatlock Miller, a colleague at the Redfern Gallery. There are a few miscellaneous items, such as labels from paintings, catalogues and invitations.
Both the general correspondence and the business correspondence have been kept together, arranged chronologically. As many of the dealers were also friends of Nan Kivell, there may be some overlap between general correspondents and dealers' correspondents.
