Introduction

Scope and Contents

Consists of seven letters (one incomplete) chiefly written to Charlotte Lord. Four of these letters are from Charlotte's brother William S. Noyes, writing from Tasmania, and commenting on conditions in Tasmania and New Zealand. Also included in the collection is a letter from John Lord (Charlotte's husband) to Mrs Papineau, governess of their two children, in London, 1830.

Biographical Note

Charlotte Lord nee Noyes was in Hobart in 1830; John Lord, her husband, had been travelling on a vessel that was shipwrecked in the Indian Ocean, and he was returning to Hobart. Their children Ann and William were with a governess, Mrs Papineau, in London. Charlotte is recorded as living in Calcutta in 1832, London in 1839 (where she was married to Mr Denton, who died that year). By 1842 she was addressed as Mrs Fraser.
