Introduction

Scope and Contents

For information about other performances by this artist, see also the 'Symphony Australia collection of concert touring schedules and artist itineraries 1934 to 1997' in the Library's catalogue.

"John Shaw was born in Newcastle of a musical family. He studied in Melbourne with Henri Portnoj and joined the Australian National Opera in 1945. He stayed ten years with the company. An Italian Opera Company came to Australia in 1955 and engaged Shaw to sing all the main baritone roles - in Italian. In 1958 he went to London, where he was engaged by the Covent Garden Company for the production of 'Rigoletto' and became on of that company's principal dramatic baritones. In 1963 Shaw returned to Australia as a celebrity artist for a concert tour for the ABC." - Karl Levett, 2014.

The list is based on imperfect holdings and is updated over time as gaps in the library's holdings are filled.
