Scope and Contents

The papers comprise correspondence, scrapbooks, newspapers, magazines and material relating to the Scout Movement, together with manuscripts of Bednall's unpublished novels and his book Strange Sea Road. Also included in the collection are diaries and notebooks.

Biographical Note

Warren Blore Bednall was born in Adelaide in 1906 and educated at St. Peter's College. He began his career on the Adelaide Register, serving next on the Adelaide Advertiser before joining The Herald and Weekly Times, Melbourne.

In 1935 Bednall sailed on a Swedish windjammer from Australia to Europe, recounting the experience in his book Strange Sea Road: the story of a sea venture (1936). He reported the Berlin Olympic Games of 1936 and served with The Herald and Weekly Times in London at the beginning and at the end of World War II. When he returned to Australia he became managing editor and later managing director of Southdown Press. Warren Bednall died in 1970.
