Introduction

Scope and Contents

Material in the Australian performing arts programs and ephemera (PROMPT) collection consists of programs and related items about the Promenade Concerts (London) including various Australian performers: Peter Dawson, Malcolm McEachern, Florence Austral, John Brownlee, Harold Williams, Horace Stevens, Evelyn Scotney, Eileen Joyce, Ruth Naylor, Joan Hammond, Marjorie Lawrence, Elsie Morison, Sylvia Fisher, William Herbert, John Cameron, Joan Sutherland, Ronald Dowd, Marie Collier, Barry Tuckwell, Yvonne Minton, Anthony Roden, and Florence Austral.

Promenade concerts were musical performances in the 18th and 19th century pleasure gardens of London, where the audience would stroll about while listening to the music. Today, the term promenade concert is often associated with the BBC Proms summer classical music concert series, founded in 1895 by Robert Newman and the conductor Henry Wood. The BBC Proms is an eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts and other events held annually, predominantly in the Royal Albert Hall in central London. The season is a significant event in British culture and in classical music. Though the concerts are now called the BBC Proms, the tickets and publications are subtitled "BBC Music presents the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts". The "Henry Wood Promenade Concerts" were named in honour of Henry Wood.

The list is based on imperfect holdings and is updated over time as gaps in the Library's holdings are filled.
