Introduction
Scope and Contents
The collection mainly comprises papers relating to John Reeves' involvement in the Victorian Branch of the Australian Labor Party and the Victorian Fabian Society. There are also papers relating to his co-editorship (with Gareth Evans) of Labor essays (1980-81) and essays on political subjects written by Reeves.
The papers include ALP Victorian State Conference papers, correspondence, circulars, reports, pamphlets, publications, news releases, minutes, leaflets, notes, photocopies of articles, newsletters, reviews, drafts and other papers. Correspondents include Gareth Evans and Brian Howe.

Provenance
The collection was donated to the Library in two instalments by Reeves' son, Andrew Reeves under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme in 1995 and 2001.

Arrangement
When the Library received the collection, it was largely filed, but not arranged in any particular order. The files and loose papers were organised into series by Library staff and arranged roughly chronologically. File contents are in original order.
Biographical Note
John (Jock) Herbert Reeves was born in 1920 and died in 1994. He was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce and Lecturer in International Economics at the University of Melbourne. Reeves was a member of the Camberwell Branch of the Australian Labor Party and served on various committees of the Victorian Branch. He was co-editor of Labor essays, published in 1980 and 1981 and a founding member of the Victorian Fabian Society.
Item Descriptions
Series 1. Australian Labor Party, 1950-93
Files relating to Reeves' membership of the Camberwell Branch of the ALP and his involvement in various committees of the Victorian Branch of the ALP including the Urban Affairs Policy Committee, the Economic Policy Committee (on which Reeves served as Secretary), Town Planning Committee, the Public Office Selection Committee and the ALP Disputes Tribunal. There are also files on other ALP matters of interest to Reeves including State conferences, activities of the Socialist Left, the Victorian ALP split (1970-71), education, the Vietnam War, and a file on Reeves' unsuccessful candidature for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Hawthorn in 1961.
The files contain State Conference papers, correspondence, circulars, reports, pamphlets, publications, news releases, and other papers.

Series 2. Victorian Fabian Society, 1947-93
The Victorian Fabian Society was established in 1947 to further the cause of socialism through meetings, lectures, discussion groups, publications and the promotion of research into political, economic and social problems. John Reeves was a foundation member of the Society and served as Secretary in 1948-50 and Chairman in 1956-66. He was also a member of the Federal Committee of Australian Fabian Societies and a member of the Constitutional Review Committee and the Research Committee.
The files are arranged roughly chronologically and contain correspondence, minutes, leaflets, notes, photocopies of articles, newsletters, pamphlets and other papers.
Series 3. Labor essays, 1980-81
Labor essays was published as a series between 1980 and 1984 by Drummond Publishing on behalf of the Australian Labor Party.
This series contains papers relating to Reeves' co-editorship (with Gareth Evans) of Labor essays, 1980-81. The files contain correspondence, reviews, notes and drafts. Correspondents include Gareth Evans and Brian Howe.
