Scope and Contents
The papers in MS 8328 comprise manuscripts and typescript drafts of Hasluck's novels, poetry, plays and other literary works. In addition, there are letters from publishers, agents and other writers, reviews of his books, files about literary and cultural organisations and a few legal papers. Other material includes manuscripts, typescripts, book reviews and correspondence relating to Hasluck's father, Sir Paul Hasluck. The papers have been organised into nine series. The major ones are: Correspondence, 1971-89: correspondence about Hasluck's writings mainly with publishers, editors and literary agents and occasionally with other writers, including Judith Rodriguez, Ian Templeman, Ray Coffey, Richard Walsh, Caroline Hobhouse, Murray Pollinger, Gina Pollinger, Kay Ronai, Frances Kiernan, David Foster, Helen Daniel, Bruce Sims, Brian Dibble, Penguin Books, Judy Barry, Lynn Allen, Peg McColl, Simon Ambrose, Fremantle Arts Centre Press, David Galeg, Rosemary Sorensen, Alison Greenwood, Bruce Bennett, Tom Shapcott, Clayton Joyce, Manning Clark, Rod Moran, Dinny O'Hearn, Robert Manne, Christopher Koch; and, Manuscripts of books: manuscripts, typescripts and notes relating to "Quarantine", "The hat on the letter O", "The blue guitar","The hand that feeds you", "The Bellarmine jug", "Chinese journey", "Truant state", "Collage", "The country without music", "The Blosseville file", "A grain of truth" and "Our Man K".

Provenance
Nicholas Hasluck presented his manuscripts and papers to the National Library under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme in 1991. A further addition was made in 2000.

Papers of his father, Sir Paul Hasluck, are held at MS 5274 and MS 1313. The Oral History Collection holds recording of interviews with Sir Paul and Lady Hasluck (TRC 11, 57/1B, 84, 92, 122/1, 503/3, 503/21, 1966 and DeB 525).

Biographical Note
Nicholas Hasluck was born in Canberra on 17 October 1942, the son of Paul and Alexandra Hasluck. He was educated at Canberra Grammar School, the University of Western Australia and Oxford University. Since 1968 he has practised as a lawyer in Perth and in 2000 he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. He was Deputy Chairman of the Australia Council in 1978-1982. In December 1998, Hasluck was appointed Chair of the Literature Board of the Australia Council for a three-year term.
Hasluck has published the following works: Poetry: Anchor (Perth, 1976); On the edge (Perth, 1981); Chinese Journey (Perth, 1985). Novels: Quarantine (Melbourne, 1978); The blue guitar(Melbourne, 1978); The hand that feeds you (Perth, 1982); The Bellarmine jug (Perth, 1984); Truant state (Melbourne, 1987); The country without music (Melbourne, 1990); The Blosseville file (Melbourne, 1992); A grain of truth (Melbourne, 1994); Our Man K (1999). Stories: The hat on the letter O (Perth, 1978). Essays: Collage; recollections and images of the University of Western Australia (Perth, 1987). Offcuts from a legal literary life (Perth, 1993). Play: Van M (Melbourne, 1990).

Series 6. Literary papers, 1978-2000
This series incudes files relating to Hasluck's involvement with the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) comprising correspondence, minutes, agendas and newsletters. He has been an active member of the ASA and advises the organisation about legal matters, such as copyright issues. The series comprises papers that Hasluck has presented at writers' festivals and his reviews of other writers' works.
Series 7. Legal papers, 1976-1992
Since 1968 Hasluck has practised as a barrister in Perth. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 2000. The series includes conference papers and material on litigation involving the Western Australia Opera.

Nicholas Hasluck has played an active part in editing and organising the posthumous publication of the writings of his father. The series comprises drafts of books and Nicholas Hasluck's correspondence with publishers. There are papers relating to Paul Hasluck's published works, Light that time has made (1995) and The chance of politics (1997).
