This collection comprises documents from Roy Wheeler's parliamentary career including letters, correspondence, photographs and ephemeral materials relating to parliamentary events and visits in both Australia and abroad (Malaysia, China, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific). Also included is a travel briefing file presented to Wheeler by the Australasian Petroleum Company during his time on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Class 1. Consignment received 2023, 1950-1971

This consignment comprises documents from Roy Wheeler's parliamentary career including letters, correspondence, photographs and ephemeral materials relating to parliamentary events and visits in both Australia and abroad (Malaysia, China, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific). Also included is a travel briefing file presented to Wheeler by the Australasian Petroleum Company during his time on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Series 1. Letters and correspondence

Letters, 1957-1971 (File 1) - Box 1 (MS 10765)

Comprises 3 letters. Letter from Chen Tai Chu, Chinese Embassy, to Roy C. Wheeler with transparency slide. Letter from Robert G. Menzies to Roy C. Wheeler exchanging pleasantries. Eulogy letter from A.P. Fleming, National Library of Australia, to Mrs R. Wheeler, with envelope.

Black and white 35mm transparency slide of a map of Taiwan. Please note that this slide was originally housed in File 1 with the Chinese Embassy letter. The slide was removed and is now housed in Cold Store 128 for preservation reasons.

Series 2. Parliamentary events and visits

Invitations, programs, menus, place cards and seating arrangements, 1952-1961 (File 2) - Box 1 (MS 10765)

For various events held in Canberra (Provisional Parliament House, Albert Hall, Manuka Oval, Royal Australian Air Force Base, The Royal Military College, Duntroon, Government House) and Sydney (Government House). Includes a cardboard badge for the "1954 Royal Visit". Some invitations include their original envelope.

Photographs, c. 1950s-1960s (File 3) - Box 1 (MS 10765)

Comprises 14 black and white photographs of parliamentarians and guests including children in traditional dress, at an event.

London visit, 1957 (File 4) - Box 1 (MS 10765)

Comprises 6 black and white photographs with envelope, 2 newspaper clippings and a show program for "The Daily Telegraph introduces Son et Lumière". Photographs include handwritten annotations on face and verso.

Miscellaneous photographs and clipping, 1950-1958 (File 5) - Box 1 (MS 10765)

Comprises 27 black and white photographs. Photographs are of various locations and events, including Roy Wheeler, Robert Menzies and other parliamentarians during a South Pacific Forum. Some photographs include handwritten annotations on face or verso. Also includes an extract of double page article "Democracy has a day out in Canberra: Crowds of "new boys" and their relatives see Parliament start work" in The Australian Women's Weekly, pages 32-33.

Parliamentary visit to Papua New Guinea in relation to resource extraction. Includes itinerary, 4 black and white photographs with captions, map showing travel route and extraction sites, correspondence with Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited and Qantas, Qantas travel logs.
