Fix this textNotes of an address on the History of the Church given
Fix this textby W. Cresswell O’Reilly, B.A. at the 70th Aniversary Meeting, held
Fix this texton 24th September, 1941.
Fix this textAn extract from the leading article of a Sydney newspaper
Fix this textreads—" Lane Cove has long been noted as the resort of disreputable
Fix this textpeople, and we do not hesitate to say that there should be a military
Fix this textpost established there to prevent smuggling and sly grog selling.
Fix this textIf an active Police magistrate were to visit this infamous district
Fix this textfrequently, we make no doubt that much would be done towards clean-
Fix this textsing it of as great a set of ruffians as the colony holds."
Fix this textBut that wasjiore than a hundred years ego, as it appeared
Fix this textin the Sydney Gazette of 25th January, 1841. In those days ’Lane
Fix this textCove’ the name applied to the district extending from about
Fix this textto Wahroonga. It did not ’enjoy* that unsavoury
Fix this textreputation for long, for in 1845, Wesleyan Methodists assembled in
Fix this textSydney learnt that a ’very gracious work* had begun, local preachers
Fix this texthad visited Lane Cove and formed a class of twelve people.
Fix this textTwo years later still, in 1845, there happened an event
Fix this textwhich was of the utmosyimportance to Methodism in the old Lane Cove
Fix this textarea and the present North Shore Line, and was the beginning of a
Fix this textclose link between this Church (formerl/y Willoughby, then Chatswood
Fix this textand now Chatswood South) and the mother church at Lane Cove (cnee
Fix this textsituated in the present suburb of Gordon), and the present Pymble
Fix this textChurch (formerljy called Lane Cove and later Gordon). That event
Fix this textwas the coming to the district of William Henry McKeown, the Grand
Fix this textOld Man of Methodism on the North Shore. In the following year,
Fix this textMay 1846, he occupied the home he had built on the Pittwater Road
Fix this text(then Stoney Creek Road), a quarter of a mile north of the Pymble
Fix this textChurch, which was only demolished in 1939, having been continuously
Fix this textoccupied for more than 93 years. For 60 years McKeown was the
Fix this textleading figure in all church enterprizes in the district.
Fix this textIn 1855 the was opened, the site is on the
Fix this textPacific Highway (then Lane Cove Road), surrounded by the Ravenswood
Fix this textCollege grounds. Some of the stones can be seen from the pathway
Fix this textovergrown by bushes, (see note bel.w). This 1855 church, demol-
Fix this textished in 1925, was succeeded by the present Pymble Church in 1879,
Fix this textand is one of the most charming sanctuaries in the Metropolitan
Fix this textDistrict with its beautiful brown stone walls, within ano without,
Fix this textand its tasteful/ appointmaits.
Fix this textNOTE "The site is now part of the Ravenswood College Grounds,
Fix this textand a pillar, unveiled on 10th December, 1949, built of
Fix this textstone from the foundatl ons of the 1855 church, marks the
Fix this textspot."
