Biographical / Historical
According to his great granddaughter, George Hooper was a blacksmith who travelled to Australia in 1839, returning to England in 1840. There were originally three journals describing this journey, but the location of the third is now unknown.
Item Descriptions
'A short journal kept by George Hooper on his going a voyage to Sidney in Australia', April 1839- January 1840 (Item 1) - Box (Shared), Folder (MS 8998)
The journal was written on board the "Strathfieldsay". The journal begins on Monday 8 April 1839 and concludes with the arrival in Sydney town on Friday 26 July 1839. Three lists at the back of the volume record Hooper's work from August 1839 to January 1840, the wages he was paid and his expenses for board and lodgings.
Journal of voyage to London on board the ships 'Medway' and 'Argyle', February - July 1840 (Item 2) - Box (Shared), Folder (MS 8998)
This journal begins on board the "Medway" on 15 February 1840. When this ship was damaged in a storm and returned to Sydney, Hooper went on board the "Argyle", which sailed for London on 8 April 1840. The volume ends with the entry for 29 July 1840.
