Preferred Citation

Items from this collection should be cited as '[Title or description of manuscript item], Papers of A.D. Hope, National Library of Australia, MS 5836, [series and/or file number]'.

Provenance

The A.D. Hope Papers were purchased from Hope in ten consignments between 1978 and 1992. In 2001 two files of obituaries and tributes, published after the death of Hope in 2000, were donated to the Library by Hope's daughter-in-law, Sarah Burns. In 2003 further papers were donated to the Library by the Menzies Library at the Australian National University (Acc03/87). These papers had been lodged by Hope over a number of years at the Menzies Library, where they were catalogued under the title, 'The A.D. Hope collection of literary manuscripts'.

Correspondence of A.D. Hope can be found in the personal papers of other individuals and in organisational records which are held in the Manuscript Collection. Some collections containing Hope correspondence include the Australian Society of Authors (MS 4572), the Poetry Society of Australia (MS 952, MS 959), Vincent Buckley (MS 7289), Hazel de Berg (MS 888), William Hart-Smith (MS 1480), Barry Oakley (MS 6094), David Rowbotham (MS 6021), Vance and Nettie Palmer (MS 1174), Roland Robinson (MS 2976), Terese Simpson (MS 9332) and Natalie Staples (MS 1657).

A manuscript poem by Hope ('Circe') is also held in the Manuscript Collection at MS 1142.

There are related sound recordings, photographs, portraits and published works in the Library's Oral History, Pictures and printed collections. Refer to the Library's online catalogue.

Arrangement

Since the first consignment of A.D. Hope papers was received in 1978 a number of different approaches to arrangement have been taken by Library staff. A preliminary finding aid was created in 1992 which incorporated all consignments received up to and including that year. With funding provided by the Ray Mathew and Eva Kollsman Trust, the series arrangement was revised and the finding aid upgraded in 2008. At this stage two consignments received in 2001 and 2003 were incorporated into the new arrangement. It should be noted that the box and File numbers from the original arrangement have been retained (Boxes 1-81, Files 1-670). The box and file number ranges for the 2001/2003 consignments are Boxes 82-107, Files 671-855. Refer to the Container List to locate material (although researchers wishing to locate material cited according to the original arrangement should refer to the attached appendix, 'Container List by Files (Original Arrangement)').

The order of Files within each series commences with Files from the original arrangement followed by papers from the 2001 and 2003 consignments (ie the numerical order of Files from the old arrangement has been carried across to the new arrangement, with Files from the 2001/2003 consignments in the same series filed immediately after them).

The internal order of material in Files from the old arrangement has not been changed. The papers in the 2003 consignment were arranged by Hope into files and the order of papers inside these files has been retained.

In the preliminary finding aid for the Hope Papers there were two files numbered 533. File 533 (also numbered 532a on the file itself) in Box 63 is now in Series 7. File 533 in Box 64 is in Series 2.

Series 2. Professional correspondence, 1953-1991

This series consists of: letters; press cuttings; lecture manuscripts, typescripts and copies; minutes of meetings and other records of societies and associations of which Hope was a member; award certificates; photographs; legal and financial papers; and reports.

Hope maintained two categories of professional correspondence: papers relating to the publication of his poetry, prose works and reviews; and those documenting invitations and arrangements to lecture in Australia and overseas and other professional commitments (including travel papers and Hope's radio broadcasts). Copies of Hope's own letters are filed amongst the papers.

Editors and others with whom Hope corresponded regarding publication of his works include Tim Curnow (Hope's agent at Curtis Brown), Douglas Stewart and Beatrice Davis (Angus and Robertson), Jim Davidson and Clem Christesen (Meanjin), Grahame Johnston (University of New South Wales Press), Stephen Murray-Smith (Overland), Roger McDonald (University of Queensland Press), Max Harris (Australian Book Review), Geoffrey Dutton (Sun Books and Australian letters), Peter Ryan (Melbourne University Press) and Ian Mudie (Rigby).

A note in File 673 signed by Hope states that 'all previous correspondence [ie prior to 1953 was] destroyed in Canberra University College [later Australian National University] fire 1952'. This may only apply to the papers received by the Library in 2003, which were previously kept by Hope at the ANU and progressively lodged by him in the Menzies Library.

In the preliminary finding aid for the Hope Papers there were two File 533s. File 533 in Box 64 is in this series. File 533 (also marked '532a' on the file) in Box 63 is in Series 7.

This series comprises notebooks containing dated handwritten entries consisting of poems, notes and prose items. In an interview published in the National Times (May 17-23, 1981, pp. 36-37), Hope stated that he scribbled rough ideas and early drafts on bits of paper and kept them in 'a dirty great big File full of fits and starts'. He used the notebooks in this series for entering 'more precise annotation of things that are finished, or ideas that are fairly well worked out'.

Series 4. Writings of A.D. Hope, c. 1918, 1927-1988

This series encompasses the entire range of Hope's writing, including published and unpublished poetry and prose, lectures, articles, speeches, broadcasts and reviews. The papers include manuscript and typescript drafts, publishers' proofs, publications, notes and correspondence. The File titles are largely Hope's, although some have been enhanced by the Library to provide more descriptive representations of the File contents. File 331 includes family papers.

The arrangement of papers in Series 4 roughly reflects the order in which they were received by the Library. As a result, categories of writing are interfiled: articles, lectures and talks followed by drafts of published material, followed by articles, followed by broadcasts and so on.

Files 741-820 contain lectures and notes received in 2003 from the Menzies Library at the Australian National University. These papers were arranged by Hope into two alphabetical sequences ('Australian writers' and 'Writers'). Small numbers of files were bundled together with covering lists written by Hope. The lists are filed at the beginning of each short alphabetical sequence to which they refer. A small number of files in the lists were not received by the Library. The files contain draft manuscript and typescript lectures, reviews by Hope of publications by the writers, roneo and carbon copies of lectures, small amounts of correspondence and press cuttings. Some of the lectures were written for Commonwealth Literary Fund seminars in 1954-1955.
