Biographical Note
Former Australian Labor Party senator and political commentator. Graham Fredrick Richardson (born 27.9.1949, Kogarah) was a major figure in the NSW Right as well as a Senator for New South Wales (1983-1994) for the ALP in the Australian Federal Parliament. He held several portfolios as Minister (1984-1994) and is best remembered for securing increased protection for native forests in Tasmania, as well as the world heritage listing of Queensland's Daintree Forest and Kakadu National Park.
During his political career, Richardson, had a reputation as one of Australia's foremost political operatives and powerbrokers in the 1980s and 1990s. Known as 'Richo' and often as "King-maker" for his role in influencing political careers, most notably in replacing Bill Hayden as federal ALP leader with Bob Hawke in 1983 and Hawke with Paul Keating in 1991. His subsequent career as a political commentator saw many radio and television broadcasts. Further biographical information at http://nla.gov.au/nla.party-559775
