Scope and Contents
Most of the papers in MS 9298 comprise correspondence, research material and drafts of The yellow lady: Australian impressions of Asia (Oxford University Press, 1992). The collection also includes papers on The male reasons (unpublished novel), book reviews and other writings, drafts of speeches and talks, official papers (relating to Broinowski's career in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and seminar and conference papers. The correspondents include Nicholas Jose, Peter Rushford, Martin Sharp, Don'o Kim, Carolina de Waart, Mark O'Connor, Christopher Koch, John Wolseley, Harold Williams, Peter Sculthorpe, Vincent Plush, Yasmine Gooneratne, Heja Chong, Jim Angel, Alfred W. Series 1. 'The male reasons', 1972-79
Broinowski's novel 'The male reasons' was written in the late 1970s, but it was never published. The series comprises correspondence, research material and drafts.
The correspondents include Lee White (Macmillan), Geoffrey Dutton, Michael Costigan, P.J. Galvin (Australian National Advisory Committee, International Women's Year), Penguin Books and Robert Maklin. Copies of most of Broinowski's letters are included.
The research material includes cuttings on the Women's Electoral Lobby, women's liberation and working wives.
Series 2. The Yellow Lady: Australian impressions of Asia (Oxford University Press, 1992), 1983-93
Broinowski began the research for The Yellow Lady in 1982. The series comprises drafts and research files. The research material includes correspondence, cuttings, photocopies, illustrations and notes. They had been kept in subject order and the arrangement has been maintained by the Library.

The series comprises papers relating to Broinowski's career as Second Secretary at the Australian Embassy in Manila, her return to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra (1975-81) and her move to Melbourne as the Regional Director, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (1992-93).
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Broinowski's correspondence with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was mainly written while she was working as Second Secretary at the Australian Embassy in Manila. The subjects include Broinowski's posting in Manila, her placement when she returned to Canberra and applications for promotions.
The correspondents include Jennifer Morrison, John Trotter, Richard Woolcott, Gregory Clark, Henry Albinski, Bill Hayden, Rosaleen McGovern, Erland H. Heginbotham and Karina Campbell.
Melbourne Club: Between 1991 and 1993 Broinowski was the Regional Director with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Melbourne. The file contains cuttings and correspondence (with Susan Boyd, Josef Szwarc and A.D. Brookes) concerning the club's policy of not allowing women to conduct a business meeting in the club.
Cultural promotion: The files on cultural promotion include correspondence (with Rick Thompson, Di Yerbury, Stephen Fitzgerald, June Verrier and Alan Deacon), cuttings, notes and printed material.

The series includes drafts of seminar and conference papers and talks. There is also some correspondence. Broinowski has been writing book reviews and some articles for journals and newspapers since the 1960s. They were published in journals and newspapers such as the Far Eastern Economic Review, Australian Book Review, Australian, Canberra Times, Sydney Morning Herald, Hemisphere, Financial Review and 24 hours. Some of the articles which were written for the Australian Book Review in 1971 and 1975 were published under the pseudonym Alex B. Wood.
Most of the papers in this series (including drafts of book reviews and articles, cuttings and correspondence) had been kept as one file. This arrangement has therefore been preserved by the Library. To comply with the Library's preservation guidelines, some of the papers had been removed from the ring binder.

The consignment comprises copies of documents created or acquired by writer, speaker and consultant on Asian affairs Alison Broinowski, 1993-2001. This material mainly consists of research material collected by Dr Broinowski in the course of writing her Ph.D thesis, 'About Face: Asian Representations of Australia' (2001) and copies of drafts of the thesis. The thesis was published in book form as About Face: Asian Accounts of Australia (Scribe Publishing, 2003).
