Introduction
Scope and Contents
MS 5402 comprises a notebook and manuscript of Homosexual: oppression and liberation; reviews; and, printed matter on gay liberation and other homosexual movements, including several issues of The Body Politic, CAMP Ink and Campaign. There is also correspondence to and from academics, publishers, politicians, leaders of homosexual movements and admirers, including Louie Crew, Gerry Hannon, Max Whitehouse, Leslie Bury (M.P.), Bill Hayden (M.P.), Harris Dienstfrey, Richard Walsh, Peter Bonsall-Boone, George Medenhall and Ralph Blair.
MS Acc10.141 comprises papers documenting Dennis Altman's career as a writer and his roles in Australian and international HIV/AIDS organisations. They include correspondence, reports, financial records, ephemera, publications, press cuttings, publishing contracts and drafts of several of Altman's books. The organisations represented in the papers include the Victorian AIDS Council / Gay Men's Health Centre (VAD / GMHC), the National Centre for HIV Social Research (NCHSR), the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) and the Global AIDS Policy Coalition (GAPC). Correspondents include Jonathon Mann and Jeff O'Malley of the Harvard School of Public Health, Ita Buttrose, Levinia Crooks and Nick Toonen. The ephemera includes publications on AIDS topics, largely of Asian origin.
MS Acc16.020 comprises correspondence, Altman's ASIO files, manuscripts of books, book reviews and notebooks; papers relating to Altman's involvement in HIV/AIDS groups and research; university work related materials; a small amount of ephemeral HIV/AIDS materials; materials related to Gore Vidal and a poster from the 1996 Salamanca Writers festival.MS Acc17.099 comprises letters and other materials with a literary or professional component, including contracts with publishers; correspondence with David Williamson and correspondence relating to Professor Michael Wilding. Papers of Brian Kiernan's wife, the editor of the Sydney Review are also included. Additionally, it includes correspondence relating to Dennis Altman's sabbatical leave in 1976 when he visited universities in Europe and had a semester in Yale.MS Acc22.063 comprises correspondence; slide transparencies; certificates; posters; assorted flyers, programs, articles, and press cuttings mainly from 2016-2021; plus publishing agreements from earlier periods.MS Acc22.145 comprises printed drafts from various stages of Altman's writing of Unrequited Love : diary of an accidental activist and God Save the Queen : the strange persistence of monarchies, some with editorial corrections noted. The drafts demonstrate the development of the books.MS Acc24.096 comprises a diverse range of personal, professional, and creative materials belonging to Dennis Altman. It includes correspondence with writers, academics, political and health organisations, as well as thank-you cards, awards, and invitations - many of which relate to his involvement in AIDS research and advocacy, and his work with La Trobe University.
