The Rugby League

News.

VOL. 15—NO. 23

(COPYRIGHT)

SYDNEY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1934.

Price—One Penny.

WESTS WIN LAST ROUND UP

PREMIERSHIP FINAL THRILLER

25,174 Spectators See Brilliant Game

Western Suburbs, with fifteen victories in seventeen

engagements, proved its undoubted superiority over all-

comers last Saturday when Eastern Suburbs were beaten fbr

the third time this season, thus leaving the;, way open for

Western Suburbs to win its way to the second premiership

gained by the club.

fjpHE record of the

first grade team is

fine one, and the

final result left no

doubt about the

ability of the players

as combination for

the main avenue of

the successful season

has been traversed

by superb team work,

ic which the honors are equally

shared by both backs and forwards.

The greatest calamity that has be-

fallen the club is the announced

retirement of the captain, Frank

McMillan, who has exercised such

wonderful power to impart his

knowledge and spirit to his team

mates and imbue them with the will

to win. Such men as the Australian

skipper are rare, and his retirement

will leave deep gap in Australian

Rugby.

The final match made history in

that the committee of the Rugby

League saw fit, after hurried con-

ference on Saturday, September Ist,

after week’s terrific rain, to post-

pone the fixture till the following

Saturday, the contention being that

many thousands would be prevented

from going owing to the awful

weather conditions and the water-

logged condition of the ground.

Such teams as Eastern and West-

ern Suburbs are always assured of

big following, and to have such

stars floundering about like Kip-

ling’s “muddied oafs” before few

thousands would have been huge

mistake, and the Rugby League is

to be commended on its action.

What brilliant displays the teams

are capable of under ideal conditions

was demonstrated in the final match,

the sparkling dashes of Thicknesse,

Norman, Brown and Beaton being

MR. H. R. MILLER,

Sec. N.S.W. Rugby Football League.

met by equally bril-

liant bursts by Mead,

Hey, Brady, Tancred

and Ridley, the latter

giving one of the

finest showings of his

career.

Possession from the

scrums was evenly

divided by Bob. Lind-

fleld and Tom Mc-

Lachlan, the rival hookers, so that

each side had equal opportunities

of attack, and the different methods

of each side were closely watched,

and the huge crowd were kept in

constant fever of excitement, from

the moment that Les. Mead opened

Wests’ account with penalty goal,

until Andy Norval scored Easts'

second try for Jack Beaton to con-

vert just as the timekeepers’ bell

rang out finis.

The teams could not have been

more closely matched, and the game

was quite as sparkling and colorful

as anything that the Rugby League

has served up in the past, and there

need be no misgivings about the

future of the game in Australia

while such brilliant exponents are

coming along.

Wests were trifle more vimful

and better organised in defence than

Easts, and that was the deciding

factor in great game, for the tri-

colors were ever dangerous with

thrusts that spelt disaster should

any weak spot be discovered in the

black and white wall.

The game will live In memory for all

time, and Wests’ players deserve all the

credit that is being showered upon them,

and the result of the match has settled

those confirmed croakers who “knew” all

about Easts going to win to ensure another

match, at least for another season.

Wests met Easts four times this season

and won three times, the scores in the first

and final matches being the same—ls to

12—each time.

Thank You All!

The New South Wales Rugby League

desires to thank those patrons, who,

year after year, rally round the Rugby

League banner, and, with their un-

swerving and loyal support, enable this

greatest of all winler pastimes to

carry on and provide the golden oppor-

tunity for young, virile Australians to

penetrate the world’s playing fields

and boost the prowess of our Austra-

lian athletes. Thanks are also due

to our advertisers and the Press for

loyal support.
