Biographical / Historical

Donovan Charles Clarke, 1904 in Bristol, England, was an Australian poet, literary critic and teacher. Clarke served as a lieutenant in the A.I.F. during World War II. He is noted for urging that Australia institute official war poets, similar to the appointment of war artists (Patricia Clarke, "Literary Sidelights on Wartime Brisbane", 2004). As an academic, Donovan Clarke had a particular interest in the study of colonial poetry of Australia. As a poet he published two collections of verse, Ritual Dance (1940) and Blue Prints (1942). He was the author of critical studies and edited the University of Sydney publication Wednesday Nights: A Creative Writing Anthology (1963). Clarke died in New South Wales in 1987.
