Introduction
Scope and Contents
Collection of maps, aerial photographs and transparencies used in creating the Gilwell Park Scout Camp map. The Gilwell Park site, first used for scout training in 1925, was fully surveyed in 1949. In 1977, in response to continued development of the reserve, the Victorian Surveyor-General J. E. Mitchell commissioned surveyor Greg Eccleston to conduct a second survey. Simultaneously, the Chief Commissioner of the Scout Association of Australia (Victorian Branch) engaged another cartographer, David McInnes, to produce an updated map. Working as a team with assistance from the late Eric Newbigin, photogrammetrist Sandi McDonald and Scouts from the 10th Malvern Scout Troop and Venturers from the Gardiner Venturer Unit, the map was finally completed and available for sale in November 1980. This collection of transparencies and printing stencils showcases contemporary map-making processes in the late 1970s-early 1980s.
Also included is a similar map, produced by the US Geological Survey, of the site of the 12th World Scout Jamboree, held at Farragut State Park, Idaho, in July-August 1967. Eccleston attended this jamboree, and the free map, with its animal and plant illustrations, inspired the design of the subsequent the Gilwell Park map.
Added in 2018 is Eccleston's original surveyor's notebook containing his field notes, bearings and traverses at Gilwell Park 1977-1980.

Biographical Note
Gregory Eccleston is an Australian surveyor who was an active member of the Scout Movement from 1948 until his retirement in 1997. Awarded his degree from the University of Melbourne in 1964, he conducted cadastral, topographical and geodetic surveys for the Division of Mapping and Survey, Victoria from 1958-1969 and 1974-1980. During this time he completed several photogrammetric and cartographic projects, including the preparation of a 1:2,500 map of Gilwell Park Scout Camp. From 1969-1974, he worked for the Department of Lands, New South Wales. In 1980 Eccleston was appointed Executive Officer (Administration) of the Scout Association, Victorian Branch. In 1983 Eccleston was commissioned by the Victorian government to research the 1836 journey of Major Mitchell, later creating the Major Mitchell Long Distance Walking Track (also known as the Major Mitchell Trail). Eccleston served as President of the Australian and New Zealand Map Society (ANZMapS; formerly the Australian Map Circle) from 1997 to 2000.
