WE NEED TEACHERS

Media helicopters hovering

above the Westfields High

School oval, on May 20, set

dramatic scene as hundreds of

students formed human chains to

spell out the words, “We Need

Teachers”.

The students and teachers were

appealing for help to solve the critical

shortage of teachers at their school.

Westfields High started the school

year with shortage of five teachers.

They now have three vacancies, two

science positions and position for

Programme Continuity teacher.

Until recently the school was short

of mathematics teacher for well

over term. The Westfields High

action follows the strike action taken

by Bidwill High School over its

shortage of teachers.

The media event was organised by

Gary Zadkovich, the Federation

Representative at the school. He said,

“It has been reported that there are

45 vacancies in NSW schools. This

is questionable when recent Con-

ference indicated that there were

about 80 vacancies in the Metropol-

itan South West region alone. The

Government and the Department

must face their responsibilities on this

matter. Politicians and Departmental

officers have proclaimed the merits

of inceased participation in formal

education, but their failure to s; pply

the necessary teachers is an indict-

ment of their inefficiency and

shortsightedness.”

Leigh Price, year 12 student, said

“We are hoping that someone will

notice our message and help us out

of this mess. It makes it hard to keep

up with your studies when you are

not being taught normal lessons.”

Mrs Jennifer Austine, parent at the

school expressed her concerns, “Our

children are going to be citizens of

tomorrow. How can they fill our

shoes if they are not being taught.

The government must supply the

teachers.”

The introduction of new staffing

formula few years ago-, has dram-

atically masked the real extent of the

teacher shortage problem.

While the Greiner Government has

inherited the problem, they were

nonetheless well aware of the extent

of the problem during their time in

opposition. They have policies to

harass grade primary school child-

ren with IQ-like tests, but no policy

to deal with problem that is clearly

out of control. The few scholarships

the Government is offering, while

helpful, are only febble attempt to

solve the shortage. The Government

is also planning to cut $lOO million

from the public education budget and

to divert funds to private schools and

to attack the working conditions and

salaries of casual teachers, move

that will certainly add to the chaos

in schools already finding it difficult

to get casual relief. The shortage of

teachers is not the only problem

Westfields High is experiencing.

There are 12 demountable class-

rooms in urgent need of maintenance

fans and heaters that do not work,

broken wallpanels and general lack

of back-up resources.

Secondary schools have had

enough of the Departmental Bureau-

cracy and Governments who have

attempted to impose all sorts of

reforms on the education system

without additional resources or even

sound educational philosophy. The

shortage of specialist teachers is more

than question of inefficiency. It is

basic disrespect for disciplines.

They prefer instead to opt for diver-

sification of the curriculum believing

that subject departments are barriers

to change in the education system.

As long as such philosophy pre-

vailed there was little likelihood of

support from the Department or the

previous Governments education

advisors (with the exception of

Rodney Cavalier) for more specialist

teachers.
