Letters of Gregory Bateman (1825-1895) to his brother, Rev. Stafford Bateman, of Newark, Nottinghamshire, and Louth, Lincolnshire (40 letters), 1858 - 1895 (File 1)

The letters were written from Liverpool, Melbourne, Kerang, Bendigo and Moama. They describe Bateman's departure for Australia in 1858, the voyage on the ship Marco Polo, impressions of Melbourne, and his life on stations and travelling in the Victoria and N.S.W. country, mainly bird-collecting. There are references to financial matters, his hopes of buying a station, a lawsuit, loneliness, droughts and family news. The last letters deal with his marriage and life as a publican in Melbourne...
