The cutting book was kept by Sir George Bowen in New Zealand (pp. 1-357) and Victoria (pp. 358-550). It includes an index and annotations by Bowen, but the cuttings are mainly undated.

Series ff. 1-357. Governor of New Zealand, 1868 - 1873
Many of the cuttings describe Bowen's official visits to towns and tours of districts in all parts of New Zealand, receptions, levees and other social functions, and speeches given at civic, agricultural, educational and charitable institutions. Other subjects include Fenian trials at Hokitika, opening of New Zealand Institute (1868), departure of Bishop G.A. Selwyn from New Zealand, massacre of colonists and Maoris at Poverty Bay by Te Kooti and his followers, the 'White Cliffs' massacre, military operations in 1869, question of retention of Imperial troops in New Zealand, visit of Duke of Edinburgh in 1869-70, colonial reactions to despatches of Lord Granville, withdrawal of Imperial troops in 1870, transfer of Governor's official residence to Wellington in 1871, English articles and speeches about New Zealand, 1873 Ministerial crisis, departure of Bowen from New Zealand.
Series ff. 358-550. Governor of Victoria, 1873 - 1878
Most of the cuttings describe Bowen's travels throughout Victoria and speeches given at receptions, balls, and other social functions, and at educational, literary, charitable and agricultural institutions. Other subjects include the constitutional position of Governors, correspondence with Sir James Fergusson in New Zealand, Bowen's books on Greece, English articles on the Empire, education and other subjects, Bowen's visit to England in 1875 and his travels with Sir Hercules Robinson in the Riverina in 1876, competitive examinations for the Civil Service, the installation of Bishop J. Moorhouse (1877), and the opening of railways to Wangaratta, Wodonga, Beechworth, Avoca, Colac and Hamilton. There are very few cuttings after 1876 and none on the constitutional crisis of 1877-78.
