The series comprises photocopies of letters written in India. There is a large group of letters from Captain Edward Gordon written to family and friends in Ireland, 1850-57. The other letters are from priests and others in Madras, Calcutta, Colombo and elsewhere, mostly sent to Archbishop Murray and Cardinal Paul Cullen, Archbishop of Armagh.
Originals are in the Dublin Diocesan Archives and were copied because of the links between India and Australia in relation to priests and the Army. This was potential article material that O'Farrell did not pursue.
Series 14. Archbishop Michael Kelly, (1850-1940) 1897-1928
Michael Kelly (1850-1940), born and educated in Ireland, came to Australia in 1901 as co-adjutor Archbishop of Sydney. He succeeded Cardinal Moran as Archbishop in 1911 and held the office until his death. O'Farrell wrote the entry on Kelly in the Australian Dictionary of Biography (vol. 9).
The series contains a small number of original letters, cuttings and financial papers and a larger group of photocopies of letters received by Kelly, together with cuttings, leaflets, pamphlets and financial papers. The correspondents include Cardinal Patrick Moran and William Redmond.
Files 4-12 pertain to Kelly's time as Vice-Rector of the Irish College, Rome. O'Farrell organised the microfilming of this Australian material when he was in Rome in 1966. The microfilm is in St. Mary's Archives. These files contain O'Farrell's notes from the originals.
Files 12-29 contain copies of material from St. Mary's Cathedral Archives.
Series 15. Patrick J. Hartigan, 1904-43
Patrick J. Hartigan (1878-1952) was born and educated in Yass, New South Wales and studied for the Catholic priesthood at Manly and Goulburn. Ordained in 1903, he was a curate and priest in Albury, Berrigan and Narrandera. In 1906 he began publishing verse in various journals. Around the boree log and other verses, written under the pseudonym 'John O'Brien', was published in 1921 and was an instant success, both in Australia and overseas.
The series consists of photocopies of papers of Hartigan, mainly dating from his later years. They comprise letters, mostly received by Hartigan, poems, talks, sermons and newspaper articles. The correspondents include Bishop John Gallagher, C. Meehan, J.J. Keneally and W. Sheahan.
The Hartigan estate, consisting of the rights to the Boree Log and an old suitcase of miscellaneous items, was inherited by Father F.A. Mecham, former editor of the Australasian Catholic Record and parish priest of Haberfield, NSW. This series consists of copies of material from that case, which O'Farrell borrowed from Mecham in relation to The Irish in Australia. Hartigan features in this publication.
Regarding File 3, Hartigan's Australasian Catholic Record articles on pioneer Roman Catholic priests (later published as The men of '38) have substantial reference to Polding.
Series 16. Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), 1904-43
The Industrial Workers of the World was formed at a convention in Chicago in 1905 and represented a challenge to the American Federation of Labor with its dominance by craft unions. The first IWW clubs in Australia were set up in 1907. For a few years the IWW was a powerful force among unskilled workers in both countries, especially in the mining, construction and timber industries. Opposed to political parties of all kinds, it advocated direct industrial action and the formation of One Big Union. It denounced the War as 'the Bosses' War' and as a result was banned by the Australian Government in 1916. It still had a large following, but many of its leaders were prosecuted and imprisoned in 1917-18 and several were deported.
The papers mostly consist of handwritten notes and transcripts of letters and minutes, compiled by O'Farrell when he was preparing his paper entitled 'The Industrial Workers of the World in the USA: revolutionary industrial unionism.' It was presented at ANU Research School of Social Sciences Department of History seminar, 13 September, 1956. At this time, it was O'Farrell's PhD thesis topic. At the end of 1956 he transferred to H.E. Holland and Ian Turner took over the IWW topic.
The original IWW records are held in the Mitchell Library in Sydney.
Files of letters and minutes have been re-organised in chronological order.

The Socialist Labor Party was founded in Sydney in 1907 as 'a political party on the principles of the international working class movement as enunciated in the platform of the Australian Socialist League'. It had close links with Daniel De Leon's party in the United States and in 1907 it sponsored the first International Workers of the World (IWW) club in Australia. It remained a small and doctrinaire organisation, although its membership increased during World War I. Despite the formation of the Communist Party of Australia in 1920, the S.L.P., under the leadership of E.E. Judd, survived as a distinct party for many years.
This small series consists of letters, minutes, newspaper cuttings, leaflets and issues of newspapers. The correspondents include C.J. Tuck, E.E. Judd, H.P. Warren, Chris Wood and J. McDonald.
The material was given to O'Farrell by J. McDonald in 1959, but O'Farrell never used it.
Series 18. Irish National Association of Australia (I.N.A.), 1919-77
The Irish National Association of New South Wales was formed in 1915 on the initiative of Albert Dryer (1888-1963), an Australian of Irish-German descent who had suddenly become converted to the cause of Irish nationalism. It was the only Irish organisation in Australia that supported the 1916 Easter Uprising. Membership increased from 600 in 1916 to 1500 in 1919 and small branches were set up in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne. These branches died within a few years, but Dryer's dedication ensured that in Sydney the Association has survived.
The papers in this series consist of both original records and photocopies. They include correspondence between O'Farrell and the Association, reports, newsletters, circulars, cash books, financial papers, library catalogues, membership lists, minutes of meetings and photographs.
O'Farrell acquired this material from three main sources: Elizabeth Dryer (widow of Dr Albert Dryer) made her husband's vast collection of papers available to him to photocopy and then return; Dan Minogue, Trustee of INA and MP for East Sydney, gave him valuable INA material at a time when the future and internal operations of the INA were under serious threat; he has acquired material as Honorary Member of the INA since 1965-66, when he represented it in Dublin at the 50th anniversary celebrations of the 1916 Rebellion.
Series 19. Australian League for an Undivided Ireland (A.L.U.I.), 1948-63
In 1948 Eamon de Valera, the leader of the Fianna Fail Party and former Taoiseach, went on an overseas tour to enlist support for his campaign against the continued partition of Ireland. In Sydney he charged Albert Dryer with the task of organising the Australian League for an Undivided Ireland. Dryer worked hard to enlist support in all States, but the League never flourished, it met with hostility from Catholic clergy, and by 1955 it was virtually defunct.
The series comprises photocopies of correspondence, minutes and leaflets in the files of Albert Dryer. The correspondents include Thomas Kiernan, Edward O'Brien, B. O'Riordan, David Webb, P.E. O'Leary, A.A. Calwell and John Pollock. It should be noted that the later files relate mainly to the Irish National Association and Irish affairs generally rather than to the A.L.U.I.
The papers were lent to O'Farrell for copying by Elizabeth Dryer.
Series 20. Embassy of Ireland (Canberra), 1946-74
This series primarily consists of photocopies of correspondence and some newspaper cuttings, arranged chronologically at the File level. File no. 17 is the exception and contains issues of the Irish Embassy's news bulletin, Information from Ireland.
This material was photocopied from originals supplied informally by the then Irish Ambassador in Canberra, Florence O'Riordan, as the basis of O'Farrell's article 'Irish-Australian diplomatic relations', Quadrant, Vol. 224, No. 3, 1980. The originals are probably now in the Irish National Archives in Dublin.
Series 21. St. Joan's International Social and Political Alliance (NSW Section), 1946-72
St. Joan's Social and Political Alliance was an organization of Catholic women, but was not an official Catholic organisation. Dame Enid Lyons was the Australian Vice-President of the Alliance. The Catholic Citizen was the Alliance's journal. The items in this series were probably given to O'Farrell by his PhD student, Sally Kennedy, in the 1980s. They were central to her topic and book, Faith and feminism: Catholic women's struggles for self-expression (Sydney, 1985). This series consists entirely of photocopies.
Series 22. Senate of Priests, 1956-71
This material was given to O'Farrell for historical preservation in the 1970s or 1980s by Father Les Cashen, then Rector of St. John's College, a personal friend and active in the Senate of Priests. The Senate no longer exists. O'Farrell did not used the material in any of his writings.

Series 23. Miscellaneous Subject Files, 1757-1995
Although this series contains subject matter dating from the mid-eighteenth century to the late twentieth century, the earlier material is mostly photocopies of original documents. The material is fairly evenly distributed throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and covers a wide range of subjects, primarily on Irish and Catholic topics both in Australia and overseas. The series has been divided into three broad subheadings: Catholic, Irish and Miscellaneous. There is some overlap between Irish and Catholic material; Files have been placed according to their primary subject group.
The South American Catholic correspondence (Files 32-42) was copied by O'Farrell because he had a PhD candidate in Spanish and South American Studies interested in the subject.
The St Patrick's Day celebration material (Files 91-109) is a small part of a major collection on St Patrick's Day and 12 July (the anniversary of the 1690 Battle of the Boyne) in Australia that remains in the hands of O'Farrell's family. The collection consists of photocopies covering the years 1830-1970s and was compiled by research assistants. His 2002 history of St Patrick's Day drew on the relevant published material.
The St. Mary's Cathedral marriage statistics files (Files 79-90) were extracted in the 1970s from St. Mary's Baptism records by a research assistant for an article on 'mixed' marriages that never came to fruition.
The originals of the Cullen-Kirby correspondence (File 44) were from the Irish College archives. The correspondence was used by Cardinal Moran in his three- volume edition of Cullen's correspondence and was in St Mary's archives when O'Farrell copied it. It was also used by Father P. Ford at some stage and may since have been returned to Ireland or Rome.

Series 24. Austral Light, 1892-1920
This series consists of photocopies of Austral Light, a Catholic monthly magazine published in Melbourne from 1892 to 1920. It is not a complete set and Files for 1896, 1901, 1902, 1903, and 1906 were empty and have been discarded.
All these extracts are on items of Irish-Australian interest, collected for The Irish in Australia.
Series 25. Articles, lecture notes, conference papers, journals, theses, ca 1830-1993
This series includes both published and unpublished material, and both copies and originals. There are newspapers, articles, theses, letters (mostly copies of 19th century letters), pamphlets and notes. There are also notes taken from articles.
Files are in alphabetical order within seven subheadings (Ireland, Northern Ireland, Irish Diaspora, Irish Australian, Catholic, Australia and Miscellaneous). O'Farrell's File titles do not necessarily start with a useful subject word (eg. author surname, title).
The date range of the material is from 1830-1993. However, the majority of the material is clustered in the periods 1830-1910 and 1960-1993. Most of the early material is photocopied.
Although he never taught a university course on Catholicism, O'Farrell gave occasional lectures on the subject. From 1967-1997 he taught a series of Irish history courses (1800 to the present) at Upper Level and Honours. During his visits to Northern Ireland from 1965-1996 he collected material for this course. He also lectured on the Irish in Australia.

Series 26. Newspaper cuttings, 1761-1992
This series consists of original newspaper cuttings from 1761 to 1969. The bulk of the cuttings covers the period from 1916 to the 1920s and focuses on major events in Ireland. The cuttings come from both Irish and Australian newspapers and are primarily about Ireland and the issue of Irish nationhood. Cuttings with more Australian content tend to deal with the development and celebration of Irish culture, such as concerts of Irish music and St. Patrick's Day celebrations; and with prominent Australian Catholic figures, such as Archbishop Mannix and Dr Kelly. Issues surrounding World War One, including conscription, are also treated. Organisations such as IWW, IRB and INA are also the subject of cuttings, particularly from 1918 to the early 1920s.
As well as collecting clippings himself, O'Farrell acquired clippings from Albert Dryer, from his parents, and from various clerical and other sources, including the clipping service of the Irish Embassy, Canberra. In the 1970s, O'Farrell had a research assistant organise the clippings. They have also been added to since then.
The majority of cuttings in the binders are from the Freeman's Journal (Dublin and Sydney) and the Catholic Press, the Sydney Morning Herald, Daily Telegraph and the Catholic Weekly. Other frequently occurring papers are: Waterford Star, Irish Catholic, New Zealand Tablet, Echo, Sun, Western Australian Record.
The following list is a sample of other papers that occur a number of times, often clustered in a particular time period. The list is intended as an overview of the range and types of papers in the series: Advocate; Age (Brisbane, Melbourne); Australian Worker; Bulletin; Catholic Times; Catholic Times and Catholic Opinion; Cork Examiner; Daily Guardian; Daily Mail; Derry Jounal; Evening News; Free Press; Gaelic American; Irish Homestead; Irish Independent ; Irish News and Belfast Morning News; Irish News and Belfast Times; Irish Press; Irish Review; Irish Weekly; Irish Weekly Independent; Irish World; La Voce; Labor Daily; Lithgow Mercury; New Era; New Ross Standard; New York Freeman's Journal; People; Republic; Southern Cross; Tribune; Tuam Herald; Watchman; Weekly Freeman.
