LESBIANS ON THE LOOSE

JULY 1991 ISSUE 19

FESTIVAL EDITION: 4,000 COPIES

FREE

FIRST WE'LL TAKE SYDNEY...

It's 18 months now since we first heard that the next

lesbian conference and festival was to be held in Sydney

and now it's here. The organisers are expecting huge

influx of dykes from all over Australia. ,*#

One of the objectives of the Conference 1$ to increase

lesbian visibility so we can expect to see lesbians bn

television, in the paper ani just about from

the 6th to the 14th of July, even at the Opera House.

Whilst the organisers are staying tight-lippecl|boiit|vhefe

banners might be going i|p, suggest that you keep yotir

eyes peeled around Sydney landmarks.

The Festival opens with launch at Glebe High School on

Sat July at around lam. The idea is for Sydney lesbians

to take 'brunch-type' food to share with the out of town

dykes to welcome them to Sydney. The firs! wllcome will

be from Koorie women in recognition of.their Ownership

of the land and this will be followed by some sh§s:§

speeches to put the Festival into global and political

context. There is going to be visual performance to lead

women's attention to the opening of the exhibition.

From the July, all Festival ticketing will mplfto Glebe

High School which will be the Festival Centre with cafe,

information and performances. You will also be able to:

complete Conference Registration there.

The Dolores Street performance on Sat night has ndll

been cancelled and has been replaced by special Opening

Concert which will focus on dance, acrobatics, mime an Ji

other physical performances. The show is on at the Tom*

Mann Theatre starting at 7pm and will feature can-can

line of well known Sydney lesbians.

The concert scheduled for Friday night, 12 July has been

kept free for those dykes who maybe didn't hear about

the Festival early enough to sign up or who for some

reason couldn't perform earlier, and would still like to be

included in the Festival. If you are interested you should

contact Georgina on (02) 5673339 or the Festival Office on

(02) 660 5831.

This is just the beginning of week of theatre, concerts,

workshops, exhibitions and other events culminating in

the lesbian extravaganza at the Sydney Opera House on

Sunday night the 14th of July. The concert will include

Judy Small, the Topp Twins Trio, George, Sue Ann Post

and other surprises. Robyn Archer has just confirmed

that she will be performing there and organiser Sand

Hall assures me that she is still trying to track down Joan

Sutherland to invite her, but I'm not sure if she is serious.

The Lesbian Conference will be held at the University of

Technology from 12-14 July. There will be over 100

workshops bn variety of issues of interest and concern

tb lesbians. There have already been more pre-

registration&: thafcwthe Conference organisers had

expected, which means that the number of women who

want to attend fhe conference may be higher than the

venue can hold. As the limit for participants has been set

at 1200 some dykes who register late may not be able to

get in. If you want to attend register soon.

If you are looking! for way to get involved in the

Conference and Festival, they are desperate for billeting.

So ifyou.h&v£Some spare room in your home and would

Hketoheipout another lesbian who needs accommodation

ring Leigh on (02) 665 3312 or the Conference Office on

(o£s 660 5831. It's great way to do your bit for the

Conference and Festival and meet new dykes.

Forall us Topp Twins fans the good news is that the Topp

Twins Trio will be performing full concert at Mars on

the Wed night after the Conference. So keep your eyes

Ipen for the publicity which should be coming out soon.

fThe nine days of the Festival and Conference will be

filled with dyke activities and there are going to be

thousands of lesbians out and about on the streets of

Sydney. IFs your conference and festival so get involved
