Biographical / Historical

Sir John Pakington (1799-1880), 1st Baron Hampton (created 1874), was a Conservative member of the House of Commons from 1837 to 1874. He held posts in the short-lived ministries of Lord Derby as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies (1852) and First Lord of the Admiralty (1858, 1866). He was Secretary of State for War in the first ministry of Benjamin Disraeli (1867-68).

Biographical / Historical

Alfred Cheeke (1810-1876), who was born at Evesham, Worcestershire, was called to the Bar in 1836. In 1837 he arrived in Sydney and he became a magistrate in the following year. He held a number of other legal appointments before becoming a judge of the Sydney District Court in 1858 and a judge of the New South Wales Supreme Court in 1865.

Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934), 1st Baronet (created 1931) was born and grew up near Worcester. He began composing music as a young man, but only achieved national fame with the Enigma Variations (1899). He was Master of the King's Musik from 1924 to his death.

Biographical / Historical

Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946) studied music at the Royal Academy of Music from 1888 to 1893 and in the following years became a notable conductor and composer. In 1900 he was appointed principal of the Birmingham and Midland Institute School of Music and from 1908 to 1934 he also held the chair of music at Birmingham University. He was chairman of Trinity College of Music and in that capacity visited Australia in 1938-39.

Biographical / Historical

George William Lyttelton (1817-1876), 4th Baron Lyttelton (succeeded 1837), was Under-Secretary of State for War and Colonies in 1846, serving under W.E. Gladstone. He was chairman of the Canterbury Association, formed in 1847 to found a new colony in the South Island of New Zealand. He visited New Zealand in 1867-68. His son Charles Lyttelton (1842-1922) became the 8th Viscount Cobham on the death of his cousin, the Duke of Buckingham, in 1889.

Biographical / Historical

Edward Dumaresq (1802-1906), who had served with the East India Company, arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1835 and was appointed surveyor-general. He acquired an estate near Longford and also purchased properties in New South Wales. His sister Marianne Dumaresq married Rev. Peter Edward Boissier (1791-1888), curate of St Peter's Church, Malvern Wells.

Biographical / Historical

Nicholas Lechmere Pateshall (1782-1854) entered the Royal Navy in 1795. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1801 and in the following year he joined Captain Daniel Woodriff on HMS Calcutta and sailed to New South Wales. His account of the voyage and the attempted settlement at Port Phillip Bay in 1803 was published in 1980. His naval career ended in 1816, but he later held the rank of rear-admiral. He was mayor of Hereford in 1839.

Biographical / Historical

William Augustine Leigh (1802-1873), the son of a merchant, lived at Roby Hall near Liverpool and Aston Hall, Staffordshire. He was a supporter of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and the South Australian Church Society. In 1837 his Adelaide agent John Morphett bought seven town acres and in 1840 Leigh donated two of them to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. In the 1840s the rents from the Leigh Street properties accounted for the bulk of the Anglican Church's income in South Australia. Sir John Cotterell, 1st Baronet, was Leigh's father-in-law.

Thomas Turner (1802-1877) was born in Hereford. He and his wife Caroline migrated to New Zealand, arriving at Lyttelton in July 1852. He died and was buried at Cust in North Canterbury.
