Finding-aid Note
Dates used in this finding aid refer to the date range of the records selected for filming rather than to the date range of the Series or Files.
Files represented in this finding aid were filmed selectively by the Australian Joint Copying Project in 1981. Control numbers recorded for files were those used by the Institute of Geological Sciences at that time. New numbers have since been applied and the original numbers are now recorded in the "Alt Ref No" of their catalogue. Where possible the most recent Series names have been recorded. Where is has not been possible to locate the files in the catalogue the original series, file and item names have been retained.
This finding aid is a revised online version of the original finding aid prepared by the Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP), published by the National Library of Australia in 2018. The original AJCP finding aids were unpublished typescripts or photocopies available from libraries that held copies of the original microfilm.

Biographical / Historical
In 1835 the Ordnance Geological Survey was established with Henry De la Beche as its first director-general. He obtained funding from the Board of Works for a museum and the Museum of Economic Geology opened in 1841. The collections were arranged in two main sections, one displaying rocks, minerals and other natural materials found in Britain and the other displaying industrial products made from them. The Museum was originally located in Craig's Court, Whitehall, before moving to Jermyn Street in 1851, when its name was changed to the Museum of Practical Geology. In 1935 it finally moved to Exhibition Road, South Kensington, close to the Royal School of Mines and the Science Museum. In 1965 the Geological Survey and the Museum combined with the Overseas Geological Surveys to form the Institute of Geological Sciences. In 1984 its name was changed to the British Geological Survey. The museum was taken over by the Natural History Museum in 1986.
