Biographical / Historical
Robert Arthur Buddicom (1874-1951) attended Keble College, Oxford, was briefly curator at the Plymouth Museum, and lectured at the London Hospital Medical College. He migrated to Australia under the name Robert Bedford in 1915. He took up wheat farming at Kyancutta in the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. In 1927 began collecting Aboriginal fossils, geological specimens and rock carvings in various parts of southern Australia. The specimens were housed in the Kyancutta Museum, which opened in 1929. Between 1931 and 1938 Bedford excavated large meteorites at Henbury in the Northern Territory. The museum was closed at some time after his death.

John Calvert (1814-1897) was a mineralogist who collected mineral specimens in Australia, New Zealand, North America, South America, Africa and Siberia. He claimed to have discovered gold-bearing rock in New South Wales in 1836 and later in South Australia and Western Australia. He was the author of The Gold Rocks of Great Britain and Ireland (1853). His collection was housed in the Calvert Museum in London. His grandson Albert Frederick Calvert (1872-1946) was born in London and first visited Western Australia in 1890. He was the author of The discovery of Australia (1893) and edited the West Australia Review in London in 1893-94.

Sir Lazarus Fletcher (1854-1921) attended Balliol College, Oxford, and was keeper of the mineralogy department of the British Museum (Natural History) from 1880 to 1909. He was general secretary of the Mineralogical Society from 1888 to 1909. In 1909 he succeeded Sir Ray Lancaster as director of the British Museum (Natural History) and held the post until 1919.

Walter Campbell-Smith (1887-1988) was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and joined the mineralogy department of the British Museum (Natural History) in 1910. He was keeper of the department from 1937 to 1952. In 1913 he was assigned the task of describing the physical properties of the geological specimens collected on the Terra Nova expedition to the Antarctic in 1910-13. He later did a great deal of work on carbonate rocks discovered in Nyasaland. He was secretary of the Geological Society (1921-32) and general secretary of the Mineralogical Society (1927-38).

Thomas Burr (1814-1866), a surveyor with the Tithe Commutation Commission in England, was appointed deputy surveyor-general of South Australia in 1839. He was the author of Remarks on the Geology and Mineralogy of South Australia (1846). He resigned from government service in 1847 and was briefly superintendent of the Burra copper mine.

Allan Cunningham (1791-1839) worked at the Royal Botanic gardens at Kew and in 1816 was sent to New South Wales as a botanical collector. Between 1817 and 1822 he accompanied the exploring expeditions of John Oxley and Phillip Parker King, later travelling extensively throughout New South Wales. He was the government botanist in 1837-39.

Biographical / Historical
Frank Debenham (1885-1965) was born in Bowral, New South Wales, and was educated at the King's School and Sydney University. He was one of the geologists in the 1910-13 Antarctic expedition led by Robert Scott. In 1919 he joined the staff of Cambridge University where he founded and directed the Scott Polar Research Institute and was professor of geography from 1931 to 1949.

Biographical / Historical
Henry Brougham Guppy (1854-1926) was a surgeon in the Royal Navy from 1876 to 1885. While serving on HMS Lark on the Australian Station in 1882-85 he made his first visit to the Solomon Islands. He returned to the Pacific and South East Asia in 1896-99 and undertook extensive botanical and geological research. He was the author of two books on the Solomon Islands (1887) and Observations of a naturalist in the Pacific between 1896 and 1899 (1903-6).

Edward Hammond Hargraves (1816-1891) migrated to Australia in 1832. He worked on the Californian goldfields in 1849-50 and on his return to Australia he prospected for gold in western New South Wales. His discoveries at Ophir, near Bathurst, in 1851 marked the beginning of the Australian gold rushes.

Biographical / Historical
Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (1792-1855) joined the British Army 1811 and served in Spain, where he produced plans of the major battlefields. He arrived in Sydney in 1827 and in 1828 he succeeded John Oxley as surveyor-general, holding the post until his death. He led four major exploring expeditions in 1831-32, 1835, 1836 and 1845-46.

Sir John Murray (1841-1914) grew up in Canada and studied geology at Edinburgh University. He was a naturalist on the surveying voyage of HMS Challenger (1872-76) and subsequently worked at the Challenger office in Edinburgh, editing the published reports of the voyage.

Sir Raymond Edward Priestley (1886-1974) was a geologist on the Antarctic expeditions led by Ernest Shackleton (1907-9) and Robert Scott (1910-13). He was elected a fellow of Clare College, Cambridge in 1922 and worked on the university's administrative staff. He was vice-chancellor of Melbourne University (1934-38) and Birmingham University (1938-52).

Sir (George) Hubert Wilkins (1888-1958) was born in South Australia and became a newspaper reporter and photographer. He was a member of the Canadian Arctic expedition (1913-16) and Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition (1921-22) and carried out the first aerial explorations of the Arctic and Antarctic (1928-29). Between 1923 and 1925 he worked for the British Museum (Natural History) collecting plants, birds, insects, fossils, minerals and Aboriginal artifacts in northern Australia. He was the author of Undiscovered Australia (1929).
